Become Self Employed - Starting Your Own BusinessNot all of us can become self-employed but even if you are an employee, I would recommend starting your own small business. It is very important to have a channel where you can fully express your passion, creativity and ideas and get well compensated for it. One major problem with being employed is that you only get paid when you are working. It is worse in Africa where salaries are poor compared the ingenuity of employees. I would say that unless, you are being paid well over $3000 a month in Africa, you should definitely seek a way out especially if you are very creative and you think you can do better. The exception would be clerics or development workers (like myself!) who accomplish more every month than you can put in monetary value. There is an erroneous idea that a job is the most secure way to generate income. However, you cannot have security if you do not have control. And you have very little control as an employee. If you start a business and it does well, you can end up with a very good pay. Being self employed, growing a business and making money from is very exciting. It will give you a great sense of personal freedom and you can do things in your own way. Being in control of your time is wonderful. You would never want a regular job once you experience the freedom of running your business. Having a job may seem more secure than owning your own business but once the business is stable and profitable, there can be no comparison. You cannot be sacked. You start out at the top - there is no need to worry about promotions. You can also work on whatever interests you at anytime. You do not need to seek permission from anyone. It is more flexible and less risky to earn money based on your results than earning money based on your time input. Working on your business means you will not miss opportunities. Value-generating ideas and your creativity will not go to waste. When you want to increase your income, you are free to do so by generating more ideas or improving on what is already doing well. One of the easiest ways to engage in business is starting your own profitable website. Since you are providing a service with no inventory, your initial costs will be minimal. You only have to pay for hosting of your web site. You may also have to invest in a computer, but you can start off with public computers. A website runs continuously whether you attend to it or not. You will write an article just once and readers can get value from it year after year. That represents a fixed time investment as opposed to getting paid when you work. And it is better than a newspaper article that can be published this week and is forgotten next week. No one is born with knowledge of how to start and run a business. You simply learn it. If you want to work long hours because you enjoy it, you can do it. If you want to work a few hours a day or not work all together, that is fine too. As long as you have a system that continues to deliver value to others, you will get paid whether you are working or not. You no longer need to be worried about mortgages, insurance and medical cover that give employees a false sense of security. There are enough products in every market covering self employed individuals. These include mortgages for the self employed, self employed insurance, loans for self employed persons or loans to support self employed individuals.
